TIME ATTACK / EDC 2007  Round 2, Silverstone.


As normal it was last minute with all 4 cars. The qualifiers for EDC drifting were held on the Friday afternoon so rather than travel to Silverstone on Friday to come back and return again on Sunday we decided to travel down on the Friday morning with 3 of the cars. The forecast had predicted rain for the Sunday so we had plenty of tyres and extra wheels, probably more than you could find in Kwick fit on a saturday afternoon. Traveling down on Friday worked in our favor as we still had work to do on some of the cars and yet again Barrie's EVO7 needed a quick check over and slight remap, so Saturday saw us working on the cars ready for Sunday.




Sweeps arrived at Silverstone at 11am on the Friday morning after been up since 10am the day before. His lack of sleep wasn't car related he had just finished his last shift of nights. The lack of sleep didn't knock Sweeps he was as eager as ever and looking forward to running at Silverstone again.

The drift car arrived shortly after midday, on the back of the truck with it's big brothers, the track R32 Skyline and Project EVO 7 RS. Once unloaded and setup we had some time to kill before the practice session started. After a very expensive sandwich and glass we returned to the pits for a chat with the other drifters, who all seemed excited and looking forward to round 2 of EDC. Some drivers were still having problems with there cars and working very hard to get them ready for qualifying.

The first practice session saw Sweeps spin on the first corner he kept his cool though and managed to keep out of the gravel. This must have played on his mind a little as his entry speeds were much slower after that. Although Sweeps wasn't carrying as much speed as the other drifters into the first corner he was hitting the clipping points perfectly and the car had some great angle.

After his first spin in the practice session Sweeps never put one foot wrong and progressed throughout the rest of day until the final qualifying runs where he completed 3 perfect runs. Entry speed into the first corner was the only thing Sweeps could be snagged on.

Sweeps made the top 16 which put him through to compete in the finals on the Sunday. He returned home for some well earn't rest ready for the Sunday competition.

Sweeps was up against Mark Luney in the 350Z who hadn't put one foot wrong all weekend, Mark Luney 350 had just changed the suspension set up and tyre choice to Toyo R888 which did the trick and Sweeps was knocked out of Round 2 of the EDC.

Since last year the DCY drift car & driver have improved so much. Sweeps now into his 2nd year of drifting found himself pushing much harder round Silverstone and unlike last year he was on full lock most of the way around the complex. Tyres play a very important role in drifting in smoke, grip and control of the car. We are currently looking for a tyre sponsor to assist the DCY team and let Sweeps and the R32 progress to next level.

Sweeps now know as "Mark 'the cowboy' Buckle"



What can we say about this one. The ex "DCY Drag Car" now converted to run in the Time Attack championship had a slight accident; a 160mph accident to be precise. After the problems that were suffered at round 1 of Time Attack at Donnington DCY drag was back stronger than ever and ready to job. Mick who drives the car likes Silverstone as he's at home with fast corners and with a car as powerful as this one with fast track there was a very high chance of a top final position.

Vehicle inspection, driver briefing all signed on and it was the first run. The first run of the day been a 'warm up' session. Mick went out in the car and put in a couple of warm up laps, going through the gears changing early, just getting a feel for the track again, learning his lines and not pushing the car anywhere near it's potential when disaster struck.

Mick was coming down the home straight towards the high speed corner at the end of the pits. As Mick was coming down the straight he noticed one of the cars ahead of him but it looked like he had moved over to the right allowing Mick to overtake him on the left. Mick held his speed but then the car moved over into Mick's path to take the corner leaving Mick no choice than either hit into the back of him or try and squeeze down the side. Trying the latter he braked hard and moved over to try and slide down the side of the other car but unfortunately there wasn't enough room and he put a wheel onto the grass. As everyone knows (and if you don't let this be a lesson) braking on grass wont work, consequently the car spun sending Mick into the far side pit wall at over 150mph. The car then spun round and round clipping the wall for a further 150 meters before coming to a stop in the gravel at the end of the straight.

Mick instantly got out the car and held his hand up to say he was ok, which was a great relief to 'probably' everyone watching. Although the car had a very bad accident the extent of the damage isn't as bad as would be expected and as this is been written the car is at the bodshop having new parts fitted and ben painted ready for round 3 at Knockhill.

The promo girls that walked around all day long with the DCY outfits on certainly cheered the rest of the day up. After the problems with the EVO 7 RS at Donnington Park a great deal of development  had been put in to get the car ready for round 2.

Ever since the car was built it was hitting good figures on the dyno and running well on the road but  Barrie noticed unstable cornering and mechanical problems at Donnington.

First repair was to the crack in the inlet plenum, a new manifold, new uprated radiator and reworked piping in the engine bay. next step was to sort out the handling, a new suspension setup was fitted along with a new none active rear diff and a different gearbox (allowing higher speeds than the 140mph RS box would give) This might not sound like that much work but it saw the EVO in the workshop for over 2 weeks.

Barrie's first warm up session took place 15 minutes after the Drag car had crashed so to say he wasn't mentally ready was an understatement. after the 15 minute's warm up session Barrie returned into the pits happy with the car. The new suspension & transmission upgrades had done the trick. The car felt much more stable and balanced round corners and during braking.

Barrie's went out on an open track session just after dinner time basically to gain more experience from the car and of Silverstone. There were plenty of cars out on track and although he over took quite a few of them he just aimed to have a plod round and gain more experience.

The second session of Barrie's timed outings saw him push the ca more although there were plenty more to come he was happy and ran a 1:12.559 putting him into 19th place.  Barrie hasn't much time in the EVO at all, missing out on Donnington due to brake down didn't help matter either and only having done one track day at his local circuit 'Croft' all the time he spent in the seat the better.

On his last practice session Barrie went out warmed the car up and was ready to do a good flying lap and push his car hard. He come out of Luffield and put his foot down for the straight and instantly noticed something was wrong. The car had no boost what so ever, thinking there was a problem he limped round Silverstone and come back into the pits where a quick inspection showed no faults at all.

The EVO was pushed into the garage, a closer inspection reveled the turbo was the problem, the shaft had sagged due to the heat. The turbo is now back, rebuilt & better than before and ready to be fitted.

Unfortunately the turbo problem meant Barrie had to retire from Round 2 of Time Attack.



George's disappointment from round 1 was still concerning him and he was went to Silverstone to come back with a podium finish. Like Barrie George had only ever had one track day at Croft but gained so much experience from round 1 at Donnington.

Georges first session was straight after the accident of the DCY drag car and George hadn't even spoken to Mick but knew he was alright. He was in two minds weather to go out or not but decided he needed the track time and jumped in the car and went out. The actual accident didn't slow George down or make him more cautious but his mind was elsewhere thinking about the drag car. The 17" wheels and Yoko's george found perfect at Donnington were causing him no end of trouble and he found himself drifting the car round the corners.

Once back in the garage he'd seen the extent of damage to the drag car and spoken to Mick who was 100% fine he as much happier. He still wasn't happy with the car though and in his own admition "wasn't bothered about continuing with the day" He decided to change from the 17" AO48's to his 18" Dunlop's.

Like Barrie, George booked an extra track session so he could learn the track. Now on the 18" Dunlop's he went out with the promise to an official he would only go steady as it was a public track session. Once round the first corner all his promises went out of the window. He found he was driving a totally different car. The speeds he was carrying round the corners were twice that of before, the power he could apply coming out of the corners was so impressive George couldn't resist going out and driving the car hard.

Back in the pits his mood had changed, he had started to forget about the Drag car and enjoy himself more. He still wasn't fully relaxed but was good enough. 1pm saw the second timed session of the day where George had chance to push the car hard. The new performance Friction brake setup George had just fitted was working fantastic, late on the brakes, knocking the speed down, back on the power the car was running great and George was driving very smooth. He started to notice a misfire and loss of power when ever he went for 5th gear but still managed to put in a 1:04.997 putting him into 1st place over all.

George had been running the car at low boost all day still had another 100+ hp to go which at Donnington saw him knock over 2 seconds of his time. The misfire was concerning George as it had got worse and worse over the last session. Turning the car up to 1.6 bar and gaining the extra 100hp would compensate for any misfire George thought even though he wanted to go out and knock more time off.

Out for the final session, his one timed lap George was confident, he was going out to knock time of his best time as far as he was concerned it was in the bag. After the boost loss at Donnington he was sure it was just deserves. George ran his first warm up lap then coming out of Luffield he developed an even worse case of misfire, no power what so ever in any gear. Trying to build his speed through sheer annoyance and frustration he could see his podium finish slipping away from him. After the first corner he knew he was down on time the car was struggling to accelerate he had no option than to just chuck the car into the rest of the corners faster than he had done all day in the chance of pulling off a 3rd place finish. Back on the power for the final dash to the finish the misfire was still there stopping him accelerate. He knew he'd blown it. Once back in the pit's he was told he got 4th place but there was still a few other out on track. George was so disheartened by the finish he didn't even know what position he finished in till about 4 days later.

At Donnington he put in the fastest lap only to finish 4th because of boost problems. At Silverstone he put in the fastest lap only to finish 6th due to a big misfire and lack of power. It's not down to bad car preparation as all 4 cars under go a huge amount of prep before every outing it's just unlucky. George is now 4th in the points table and aiming to do well at Knockhill on another track he's driven. "Everyone likes to win, some more than others. Obviously i am disappointed, to say I have never done any track driving before and to of been in a position where I could be leading is fantastic but never mind I am forth and still happy with what I have archived. The biggest thing of all is the taking part and enjoying yourself no matter where you place and I do enjoy myself"
